| Friday, July 4, 2008 Thursday Morning Coffee - Watauga all alone on the color map, AG says no illegals in college and ASU gets good NCAA report card by BooneWeb Blogger (posted: 5/8/08) Glancing at some Thursday morning headlines as kids grow up so fast these days.
Extended forecast. Here comes the rain.
Raising Eyebrows. 'What we see there is that "the county would buy land to support the theme park in exchange for a long-term commitment to keep the business operating" (a projected pay-out of $3.15 million of county money) and "the county would also provide marketing money over the next six years" ($150,000).' (Witness the packed restaurants and hotels the days of Thomas the Train and you understand Tweetsie is a must-save)
Watauga, purple in a sea of pink. College kids love them some Obama.
A yardstick for November's election? 'According to the State Board of Elections, 1,563,958 people voted in the Democratic presidential primary this year. That's 38,109 more than the 1,525,849 who voted for the Kerry-Edwards ticket in 2004.'
Thoughts on the Medford trial: Why isn't this national news? 'As we've heard this week, the alleged public corruption wasn't just limited to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department. It allegedly reached into the Haywood County Sheriff's Department, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department and possibly the Cleveland County court system.'
AG: Close colleges to illegal aliens. 'Higher education is a public benefit that illegal immigrants are not entitled to under federal law.'
State surplus bigger than estimated. More evidence our economy is in the tank.
Dole, others pressure EPA to drop ethanol requirements. 'There has been a worldwide shortage in cereal crops, such as rice, wheat and corn, due in part to the renewable fuel standard included in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which mandated highly subsidized corn-based ethanol production.' (Behold the early legacy of the new majority!)
App State does right by the APR. 'Basically, what this means is that App State sees its players graduate and gets a NCAA-approved pat on the back. With regard to some of our SoCon brethren, not so much.'

It is a grant from the Tourism Development Authority which generates revenue from the occupancy tax that tourists pay when they stay in Watauga County short-term vacation rentals.
